How to read the result

Residential / commercial (RDI): the USPS Residential Delivery Indicator for each delivery point. Personal accounts and card applications usually expect a residential address.

CMRA: a commercial mail-receiving agency, including virtual mailboxes and stores like The UPS Store. It is the most common reason banks reject an address.

Deliverable (DPV): whether USPS can deliver to the address and whether the apartment or suite is right.

FAQ

Why do banks care about CMRA?

US banks must verify a customer's real residential address under anti-money-laundering rules. A CMRA receives mail for others and is not a real residence, so many banks reject CMRA addresses for accounts and card applications. Commercial addresses are not always rejected, but personal accounts usually expect a residential one.

How accurate is it?

Results come from USPS address data via Smarty, a CASS-certified provider, the same kind of data banks and carriers use. USPS flags can change, for example when a mailbox store opens at an address. Cached results are kept for at most 90 days and always show the date they were checked.

Do you store the addresses I check?

We store the standardized address and its result so the next person who checks it gets an answer faster. We do not record who checked it: no sign-up, no stored IPs, and free checks are counted only with irreversible hashes.

I lost my code. What now?

Your code is on the Stripe receipt sent to the email you paid with. If you cannot find it, email contact@upthos.com with that email address and roughly when you paid, and we will look it up.

When is a check not counted?

It is not counted when the address is not found in USPS data, when the data service is unavailable, or when the human check fails. A check counts only when we return a result, including cached ones.

Results come from USPS data and are for reference only; they do not predict any bank's decision. Not legal or financial advice.
